Ansel Adams
Born in San Francisco, California, Adams studied music and became a concert pianist. A meeting with Paul Strand in 1930 affected him so greatly that he decided to dedicate his life to photography. A committed conservationist, he used his work to influence and support conservationists worldwide. Adams photographed the American West and Southwest extensively. His first one man show in 1936 set the stage for a career spanning nearly 60 years with works exhibited in nearly every major museum including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Adams was instrumental in establishing the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art in 1940 and at the California School of Fine Arts in 1946. Before his death in 1984 in Carmel, California Adams was awarded the Medal of Freedom from the United States.
