John James Audubon
John James Audobon was born in Les Caes Haiti to a French naval officer and a Creole woman. His mother was killed in a slave uprising while he was still an infant. He was lovingly raised by his father and his stepmother in the french countryside. There he developed a love of wild life and sketching, especially birds. In 1803 he was sent to mangage Mill Grove, a family farm in Pennsylvania, to avoid Napolean's army. Lucy Blakewell became his wife in 1803. Her love and support, coupled with Audubon's marketing skills, made Audubon a great success. His to major works are Birds of America and the Vivaprous Quadropeds of North America. Published in London between 1827-1838, the Birds of America contains 435 watercolor prints in aquatint and engraving. He collaborated with the engraver Robert Havell and the work took eleven years to complete. In this monumental work, Audubon illustrated the birds life size, aproximately 25 x 28". It was later published in a smaller, octavo, format. They have become among the most famous ornithological portfolios. His later work, The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America was complete by his sons Victor Gifford Audubon and John Woodhouse Audubon.
