Art of Early Civilization

Early Civilization: Even the earliest civilizations have felt a need for creative expression and an historical record of their existence through art. The principled canons of Ancient Greece and Rome, the divination of ancient Egyptian Kings, and the fine porcelain artifacts and Japanese Ukiyo-e (woodblock prints beginning in the 17th Century) of Asia have influenced centuries of emerging styles and art movements. The Renaissance recaptured ancient ideals lost during the Middle Ages. Impressionist era artist Degas borrowed from the Japanese masters for his sharply cropped compositions of bathers and dancers (The Bathers). Picasso was inspired by African masks and this influence is seen as Cubism develops in the early 20th Century.
