Russell Babcock
A fascination with classical history, as well as the French Neo-Classical revival of the late 18th and 19th Centuries, motivated Russell Babcock towards self-education in the field. This interest is evident in his selection of subject matter and execution of the works. Graceful lines, classic forms and rich surfaces in a soft, natural palette echo ancient themes which have been exposed in excavated archaeological sites. "Russell Babcock" is actually a pseudonym of James Manning. James wanted his plaster works to be marketed under the name of Russell Babcock (a tribute to his grandfather), so as not to compromise the growing reputation of his paintings under his own name. His artistic training included work towards his B.F.A. at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia. James died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage on December 3rd, 1997, at the age of 37.
