Charles Burton Barber
Charles Burton Barber, born in Great Yarmouth, was a London based painter living near Regent's park. Educated at the Royal Academy Schools in London, Barber exhibited, for sixteen weeks, at the Royal Academy in 1882 and became ROI in 1883. Specializing in depictions of children and dogs and cats in genre scenes, he was popular with the Royal Family, painting Queen Victoria's favorite dogs, frequently with groups of grandchildren. Barber's work varied from almost photographic to the sketchy, and tended to be sentimental. By the time of his early death, he was described as 'one of Britain's most promising animal painters,' and the writer and humorous artist Harry Furniss held him in a high enough regard to write a book on him. Much of his art can be seen in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight.
