Frank Weston Benson
Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Frank Weston Benson attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 1883, he left for Paris to study at the Acadamie Julian with Boulanger and Lefebvre. Returning to the U.S., Benson taught at the Portland School of Art and at the Museum School in Boston. An American Impressionist influenced by the French painters, Benson began his work portraying young women. After World War I, he devoted himself to painting outdoors and capturing light at the different times of the day. Although famous for his etchings of wild ducks, Benson was a diverse artist who utilized both watercolor and oil in painting portraits, landscapes and interiors. His refined still lifes and interiors stress compositional order in life-like settings. Benson is represented in many important American museums and private collections and he has won numerous awards and medals. He was elected an Associate of the National Academy in 1897 and an Academician in 1905.
