Jiri Borsky

Jiri Borsky was born, and spent his childhood, in a Czech village, where there were hardly any cars and the biggest danger on the roads were the geese, which hissed menacingly at passers-by. His father was a musician and played the several instruments which littered their house at Saturday village dances. Jiri Borsky states: "I cannot imagine life without music", and he still listens to folk music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Jiri Borsky later lived and studied in Prague, where he was inspired by the elegant beauty of the city, but was driven out by the brutal Soviet invasion of 1968. He came to England in 1969 and settled in the Potteries area in the North of England. Jiri Borsky now lives and works in Staffordshire, England, and, apart from a small teaching commitment at the local university, he paints full time. He exhibited in 1966 at the Malostranska Beseda, Prague and, after his arrival in England, he started to exhibit in the United Kingdom from 1971. The first of his many exhibitions was held at the Brampton Museum in Newcastle Under Lyne and his work has been collected by institutions including the City Museum Hanley, the Salford Art Gallery, the Gateway Art Centre in Shrewsbury and the Royal Hospital, Edinburgh. Jiri Borsky has also been featured in a 30-minute Granada TV documentary entitled "The Wanderer" and in various art books.
