Guy Buffet
Guy Buffet was born in Paris on January 13, 1943. His parents owned a restaurant and spoke often about art and the famous artists that worked in the city, Chagall, Matisse and Picasso amoung them. He recalls drawing on napkins and linen tablecloths when his brothers were busy with kitchen preparations. Buffet's mother gave him his first set of paints when he was twelve and the restaurant soon became his gallery. An American purchased a watercolor the next year and at 14 he was transferred from public school to the Beaux Arts in Toulon. He finished his artistic training in Paris. In 1961 he was drafted into the French Navy and became the official artist. While hitchhiking on shore leave in the South Pacific the major of the town picked him and his friends up and on a tour of the ship observed Buffet's paintings. Permission was granted for an exhibition in the town and Buffet went on to have one-man shows in Tahiti and New Caledonia. In 1963 he had his first exhibition in Hawaii. It was there he settled and received commissions for major murals at libraries across the state of Hawaii. Although his subjects include inspiration from his island paradise, perhaps Buffet is best known for his images derived from his French heritage. Chefs, waiters and fine cuisine have prompted commissions for a wealth of items; dinner plates, coffee cups, ties, shirts and Buffet is the official artist for Champagne Perrier-Jouet designing gift boxes. His art is available in originals and limited editions and is represented in major galleries and collections throughout the world.
