Leo Carty

Leo Carty says his life has been about catching up with his gift as an artist. From childhood, his family, teachers and neighbors have recognized his talent, and he took the challenge of living up to his gift very seriously. Growing up in Harlem, Carty remembers enjoying the friendly competition of pick-up art contests with neighborhood kids. A self-described history buff, he now thrives on studying the heritage of black people in the Virgin Islands, where he lives, and portraying their lifestyles at the turn of the century. Beautiful historical buildings on the islands provide a rich cultural backdrop for his scenes.
