Lene Alston Casey
For Lene Alston Casey, what began as a hobby in 1989 has developed into a career. The prevailing images in her work reflect her love of gardening and the lush, natural beauty of the Deep South. Her ability to skillfully capture detail as well as nuances of light and shadow is extraordinary in a painter so early in her professional career. Since she began painting, Casey has studied with a number of well-established realist landscapists in North Carolina including the highly acclaimed painter Edward Szmyd. Born in Littleton, North Carolina, Casey attended Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and graduated in 1959 from the University of North Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education. She taught art in junior high schools in North Carolina and New Jersey before pursuing her studies in interior design at New York University and Parsons School of Design in New York City. Casey later returned to the South where she was an active interior designer with various firms throughout the region. While residing in South Carolina, she was vice president and senior designer at Hilton Head Interiors. Casey has been a professional member of The American Society of Interior Designers since 1968, and she is still active in consulting work in interior design.
