Paul Cezanne
Cezanne was born in Aix-en-Provence, France in 1839 and studied art in Paris. His early paintings are done in dark tones, but the influence of French Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro created a shift to painting in bright hues. While initially exhibiting with the Impressionists he later rejected their ideals and is today more associated with the Post-impressionists. Cezanne was obsessed with visual perception and his works usually show several different viewpoints. The critics were extremely harsh on his work and many debated Cezanne’s ability to manipulate nature’s light by the application of a single color. In his final years they began to fully appreciate his originality in color intensity and compositional organization. He lived most of his life in isolation and did not exhibit often, leaving many pieces unfinished and destroying many others. Cezanne had a great impact on art of the 20th century and is considered the father of modern art.
