Sherri Crabtree
You might say Sherri Crabtree didn't have a choice about becoming an artist. She was born into a family of artists in Independence, Missouri. Quite naturally, Sherri found herself following in their artistic footsteps. She loved creating paper dolls as a child and believes this early preoccupation was the basis for her fifteen-year career as a freelance illustrator for the fashion industry. Today Sherri's fascination is with watercolors. "I've tried several media over the years, but nothing compares with the fluid spontaneity of watercolors. It's magic for me every time I lay the first stroke on pristine white paper and watch the blending of colors, always in a fresh and fascinating way." Sherri tends to like detail but renders it in a loose manner. Her paintings start with a light pencil drawing to "feel out" her subject. Once she starts applying paint, she lets the medium reign, along with her subconscious, which "often results in a different painting than I envisioned." But she has learned to trust this development and "go with the flow." Just about all subject matter inspires Sherri as she thinks of things in terms of shapes, textures and color combinations; but it is people, both in traditional and whimsical forms, that she most enjoys including in her paintings. Although without formal art education or even many art classes, Sherri says her teachers "counted" as they were "wise, giving and dedicated." Over the years as she moved around the country she developed her own method of "read, observe and apply" and of course, "perseverance." Sherri's most recent move has been to a 1790 farmhouse on the banks of the Ottauquechee River in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Her paintings are exhibited coast to coast from Seattle to Vermont.
