Raoul Dufy
French painter Raoul Dufy was born on June 3, 1877 in Le Havre. In addition to being a painter, Dufy was a printmaker and decorative artist. From the age of 14 he was employed as a book-keeper, but at the same time he developed his innate gift for drawing at evening classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1905, under Matisse's influence, he produced Fauve paintings with strong color areas and an intermittent heavy black contour. Later, Cubism and the influence of Cezanne prompted him to a monumental sense of form, as in "Les Trois Baigneuses" (1919). His encounter with works by Van Gogh at the Galerie Berheim Jeune and with Impressionism at Durand-Ruel is reflected in such early works as "Beach at St. Adresse".
