Ray Ellis
Often called an American Impressionist, Ray Ellis is recognized for the originality of his paintings. His brushstrokes are loose yet firm, and each work clearly demonstrates his talent for creating light and shadow. Best known for his outstanding watercolors, Ellis' subject matter ranges from beautiful florals and landscapes to hunting and sailing. His ability to capture the moment is incredible and his work seems to come alive upon viewing. Born in Philadelphia, Ellis attended the famed Philadelphia Museum School of Art. After holding his first one-man show in 1947, he served four years in the Coast Guard during World War II. Upon completing his military service, he founded his own advertising agency in New Jersey and New York. Painting in his spare time, Ellis was soon elected to the American Watercolor Society. Ellis' works are widely exhibited and have received numerous honors. In 1969, he began to devote all of his time to painting. He moved south to Hilton Head, South Carolina in 1974, and then to Savannah, Georgia. Recently Ellis has settled in Martha's Vineyard.
