Erte
Erte was born Remain de Tirtoff in St. Petersburg. He derived his name from the french pronunciation of his initials. He created his first costume design at the age of five and at nineteen moved to Paris to pursue a career in fashion illustration. It was there he began the work that would make him famous, creating cover illustrations for Harper's Bizarre magazine. Erte developed his unique Art Deco style designing over 250 covers and drawings for Harper's. His flamboyant style and love of the exotic lead him to design extravagant costumes and sets for the Folies- Bergere in Paris and George White's Scandals in New York. For 40 years he dressed such stars as Lillian Gish, Josephine Baker, Mata Hari,Mary Garden and Anna Pavlova. At age 75, he began creating limited edition serigraphs and bronzes based on his designs. This brought his art to a wider audience. The demand for Erte's art lives on. He was a major influence on art and design of the 20th Century and is known as the "Father of Art Deco". Erte's work is in prestigious collections worldwide including the Smithsonian, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and New York's Metropolitan Museum and The Museum of Modern Art.
