Susan Friedman
The classic still life imagery of Susan Friedman exhibits a calm tranquility and an elegance of line and form. Her floral photographs capture a timeless sense of beauty in their archetypal style and skilled technique. Friedman explains, "It is important to see what is invisible to others. I feel that if my work leaves an image on the mind, something has been accomplished." Executed with a large format camera, her lens brings forth an exquisite clarity of form with a fine attention to details. In addition to her photography artwork, Susan Friedman has been successful with a number of different mediums. Her work as a documentary filmmaker has won her acclaim throughout the nation. One of her documentaries was awarded a Grammy in 1990 and she also received a Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 1995. Recently, Friedman's documentary photographs were published by the Sierra Club in a book entitled, A Separate Place. In addition, she has had numerous solo exhibitions of her still photography both nationally and internationally, in places such as Tokyo, Berlin, Amsterdam and San Francisco. Several institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Oakland Museum and the Biblioteque National in Paris, collect her work.
