Nivia Gonzalez
For admirers of her work, Nivia Gonzalez is synonymis with strength of women, strength of heritage, strength of self. Her bold images of independent and graceful women are a reflection of the artist herself. A native of San Antonio, Nivia credits her family with forging the creative energies within her. As a young child she and her father, a natural story teller, would select words and phases and playfully construct short stories together. By the age of seven she was writing and finally illustrating poems. The appreciation of bold colors, that now characterized her paintings, are a gift from her mother. As a young artist, she found inspiration in the women that surrounded her. Her mother, her sisters, her aunts and her grandmother, also an artist. She called them a life force, not just in her family, but in her culture as well. Nivia is celebrated among women and Hispanics groups for her subjects and her style. She is careful, however, to say that she is an artist first. Nivia is a women, a mother and a Mexican-American and no one category can define her work.
