Jean Guichard
While attending college Guirard was called to national service by the French Navy in 1970 and was assigned to a ship operating on the high seas. During this time, Guichard discovered the mythical coastlines of the great North; Newfoundland, Iceland, Greenland, Norway, and the Baltic Sea. His vivid memories of the raging storms and the treacherous task of navigating ice drifts are what led him to amateur photography. He returned to Paris in 1971 and joined the Ministry of Trade and Industry where he worked on industrial films and completed his photography training. In 1976 he began doing magazine features and portraits of political figures. Guichard’s talent as a magazine photographer gave him exposure and he was soon covering international sailing events. He then went on to photograph the Middle East conflict in Lebanon and the Iran/Iraq War. He founded a company in 1989 specializing in high-class magazine features. During this time he completed his famous photographs of the lighthouses of France, which was the last photographic assignment undertaken by Guichard himself. In 1990 he hung up his camera to devote his time to running his various businesses.
