David Hockney
Hockney was born on July 9,1937 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. He studied art at the Bradford School of Art and then at the Royal College of Art in London. In the 1960's his paintings of consumer goods and psychograms allowed him to be associated with the Pop Art movement. At this time he also started teaching at the universities of Colorado, Iowa and California. He shuttled between England and the United States until 1978, when he permanently settled in Los Angles, California. Hockney paints several subjects his most famous of which is the swimming pool series inspired by the "California modern" look of Los Angles. In the 1980's he became heavily involved in photograhpy and started producing photocollages. He is also a printmaker, stage designer for ballets and operas and has published several books including Hockey by Hockney, Travels with Pen, Pencil and Ink, Paper Pools, David Hockney Photographs, China Diary, and Hockney Paints the Stage.
