Henry John Yeend King
Henry John Yeend King was a well-known late Victorian genre and landscape artist. After initial training with William Bromely in England, he went to Paris to study under Bonnat and Corman. It was this training in Paris, along with the influence of French Impressionism that molded his fully matured style with its plein air technique and bold coloration. King lived in London for most of his life but like many of his contemporaries, his heart was in the country. He painted scenes of rustic genre and countryside, almost never showing the heavily industrialized cities. His scenes depict farm girls, often using his daughter as a model, in tranquil landscapes and gardens. In 1879 he was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists. His works are in many museums including the Tate Gallery, Walker Art Gallery and Leeds Art Gallery.
