Rene Magritte

Rene Francois Ghislain Magritte was born in 1898 in Lessines, Belgium and entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels at the age of sixteen. In 1921 he spent a year in the military, followed by work as a graphic artist, where he produced mostly wall paper designs. It was during this time that he became influenced by the Surrealist artist De Chirico. Magritte's first Surrealist painting was finished in 1927, entitled Le Jockey Pender. He befriended other popular artists in the Surrealist circle including Miro, Breton, Ernst and Dali and contributed to the final issue of a Surrealist publication called, "Revolution Surrealiste." He experimented with other styles later in his career but returned to Surrrealism as a result of the public shock over his "Renoiresque" style. Magritte died in 1967 in Brussels. During his life he exhibited in numerous galleries and had retrospectives on his work in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and in Rotterdam. His paintings continued to be enjoyed today for their irrational and dream-like qualities.
