James Manning
James Manning’s artistic training included work towards his B.F.A. at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia. Having travelled to Europe numerous times, he was heavily influenced by ancient Italian frescoes of both the Roman and Renaissance periods. His technique relies on layers of plaster applied to canvas, which is then distressed. The images are then painted with translucent glazes allowing the under-painting and distressed surfaces to show through, giving a fine aged patina. James died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage on December 3rd, 1997, at the age of 37.
