Jean Francois Millet
Jean-Francois Millet was a French painter, etcher, and draftsman, and he studied in great poverty in Paris, absorbing the lessons of Flemish painting, French classicism, and above all Possin. He created his most significant work at Barbizon after 1845. His best-known work, The Angelus, expresses his sympathy for the peasant's simplicity and devotion in the face of nature. Millet reconciled Classicism with Realism in direct impressions from nature. His work inspired Van Gogh and contemporary social realists.
