Georgia O'Keeffe
O'Keeffe was born on November 15, 1887 in Sun Prarie, Wisconsin and was raised on a farm. She received art lessons at a young age in her home and eventually went on to study at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Art Students League in New York. In 1908 she won the William Merrit Chase still life award while at still at the Art Students League. O'Keeffe continued her studies at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville and at the Teachers College, Columbia University. She later began teacing art in pubic schools in Amarillo, Texas and at Columbia College, Columbia, South Carolina while exploring ideas from artist and teacher Arthur Wesley Dow regarding artistic expression. He believed it was an artist's mission to convey personal feelings and ideas in painting and to best achieve those goals through color and line harmony. In 1916, a photographer and owner of gallery 291, Alfred Stieglitz, became interested in her work and exhibited 10 charcoal drawings in his gallery. In the next two years Stieglitz would give her a solo exhibition in his gallery and provide her with financial support for her painting. They fell in love in the summer of 1918 and were married in 1924. Stieglitz worked tirelessly to promote O'Keeffe's work until his death in 1946. She moved to three years New Mexico after his death and continued painting until she lost her sight in 1970's at which time she worked in sculpture through the mid 1980's. She diedat the age of 98 in New Mexico on March 6, 1986. While O'Keeffe produced paintings of landscapes of Lake George and animal skulls from New Mexico, she is best known for her florals. These enlarged floral images exude feminity with soft, curvilinear lines that capture more than the surface of her subjects. O'Keeffe's paintings can be seen in museum collections throughout the United States and she is considered one of America's most successful artists.
