William S. Phillips
Phillips grew up loving aviation and art but never thought he could parlay either into a living. At college, he majored in criminology and had been accepted to law school when he sold four of his paintings to an airport restaurant. That was all the encouragement he needed to pursue a career as a fine art painter. To date, honors and awards highlight his career. He was commissioned to paint for the Royal Jordanian Air Force after King Hussein received one of his paintings. In 1986, Phillips was honored with a solo exhibit of his paintings at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. In 1988, he was chosen to be the United States Navy combat artist and was awarded the Navy’s Meritorious Public Service Award and the Air Force Sergents Association Americanism Medal.
