Pablo Picasso

The son of a drawing Professor,Pablo Ruiz y Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain in 1881. He started drawing at the age of 10 and lived most of his life between Barcelona and Paris. He established himself in Paris in 1890 and became associated with such innovators as Braque and Matisse. His early work is graphic and sometimes reminiscent of Lautrec and his work with Braque, gave birth to “cubism”. From that point on, Picasso was constantly concerned with the architectonics of painting, not content with distorting a subject. He was interested in producing an abstract art which has had repercussions throughout the field of applied design. His idea was that “through art we express our concept of what nature is not.” He contined to be innovator of art until his last decade of life. He died in Mougins, France on April 8, 1973. Picasso is represented in print collections around the world. He has painted stage sets for the Russian Ballet, murals which adorned the Spanish Pavillion at the Paris exposition of 1937, his portraits hang in the Metropolitan Museum, and his prints and paintings are in public and private collections throughout the world. Virtually no artist of the twentieth century has escaped the influence of Picasso.
