Brian Pollard
Brian Pollard, born in the West Midlands in 1946, qualified as a pharmacist in 1968 and graduated in medicine in 1977. Currently a GP, he gains much of his inspiration from his holidays in a tiny fishing village in the west of England. Although he has painted for most of his life, it is only in the last few years that he has developed a striking and uniquely humorous style. He has invented his own extensive and stylistic alphabet without aid. Based on observation, his images are far removed from the academic approach. The appeal of his paintings lies in their directness and simplicity, their bright, cheerful colours and their quirky humour. They are a successful antidote to the more depressing facets of his everyday work. "Painting relaxes me as if I have taken a Valium", the artist says. If pushed to describe his style, he would say that he is a modern primitive. Though this labelling would group him with naive painters, popular painters, reality and Sunday painters, Brian Pollard is of course none of these. His work brings colour into the greyness of the modern everyday life. His azure skies, cotton-wool clouds and brightly coloured creatures have the ability to make the dourest commuter smile.
