Pierre Auguste Renoir
Renoir was born in Limoges of modest birth, one of seven children and the son of a a tailor. When he was three his family moved to Paris where he haunted the Louvre from boyhood. Renoir did not receive formal training as a youth and began his artistic career as a decorator of porcelain and fans. He spent much time in the forest of Fontainebleau and was greatly influenced by Manet and Delacroix. He painted the life that unceasingly fascinated him. Typical of Renoir are effects of glancing the light that partially disperse into shadow. An an Impressionist, he was a painter obsessed with the sense of touch and how light touched his subjects. In 1881 he journeyed to Italy to further his studies with the use of light, painting in full sunlight. In 1903, he moved to the South of France and settled, continuing his work in the plein-air technique. There he lived out his days painting women as myths of the natural world with images magnificent yet commonplace, and all of them gloriously alive. Renoir died in Cagnes on December 3, 1919.
