Realism

Realism as a style refers to natural representation without attention to minute details. As a movement it began in the 19th Century with Courbet and Millet and is characterized by a depiction of modern life. For example Millet’s The Gleaners portrays workers toiling in a field. Auguste Rodin (The Kiss) is a prominent realist sculpture. Realism paves the way for the Impressionists.
