Romanticism

Romanticism is a style prevalent in the first half of the 19th century particularly in painting in which imagination played a dominant role. One of the chief concerns of the romantic artist was the illustration of literary themes, often derived from contemporary romantic writings. In the name of nature Romantics exalted liberty, power, love, violence, the Greeks or anything that was primarily emotional. William Blake illustrated books of his own poems. Other artists working in this style include de Goya's The Colossus, Eugene Delacroix's Liberty Leading The People, Thomas Cole and JMW Turner's Burning of the Houses of Parliament.
