Egon Schiele
Egon Schiele only wished to become an artist. He drew constantly. His mother said, in an interview with a Vienniese newspaper, "when he was seven he sat himself down on a window ledge and filled a thick book with drawings- trains, street, buildings. Schiele was born in Tulln, Austria, approximately 19 miles west of Vienna, on the River Danube. His career as an artist was a brief, angst ridden and isolated. At a time when Sigmund Freud was discovering effects of sexuality on the human psyche, Schiele broke away from the hedonistic attitudes and art of the Turn of the Century. His art is an intensely personal, psychological diary. The art of the German Expressionist at this time were on the same journey in their work. Schiele would enjoy much success in his brief career exhibiting with these artists and with the Vienna Succession in 1918.
