Ton Schulten

Ton Schulten was born in 1938 in Ootmarsum, a small town in Holland. Today he is celebrated as Holland's most successful contemporary painter. The works hanging in this room are from his first exhibition in the United States, which took place at The Lowe Gallery in June, 1997. Though always fascinated with painting, Schulten first pursued a career in advertising, and for many years he co-owned a very promising advertising agency. In 1989, a near-fatal automobile accident changed his life forever. The accident left Schulten in a coma for two weeks, during which time he remembers seeing a constant flow of images comprised of shifting prisms of color. Upon his recovery Schulten closed his agency and began painting full-time; his goal was to recapture his visions on canvas so that he might share them with the public. "It's a miracle that I am still alive," he says, "this has given me a new zest for living and I try to transfer this feeling of optimism onto canvas." Schulten first painted abstract canvases dominated by colorful geometric areas. This was a logical, though unconscious, continuation of his work as a graphic designer. Next came a period in which large floral themes played a major part. In 1992, Schulten turned his attention to landscapes, and he began by painting scenes of Twente, the region in which Ootmarsum is located. Over time, his landscapes have become less regional and more universal, though the rolling fields planted with maize, the ancient wooded banks and the quiet hamlets have not been forgotten. Schulten's work is characterized by bright colors that he uses to fragment the landscape into large vertical bands. The effect is that of a mosaic on which the ever changing light throws different colors again and again. "There is always something new to be discovered," he says, "moreover I feel that my work is still gaining in depth. There seems to be no limit to what one can do with paint. Its beauty is increasing, maturing. "I have not finished, on the contrary, for I have now discovered the town. http://www.artinaclick.com/search/results.asp?fk_artist=9053&refsrc=alleff 9054 Bloomfield Pip http://www.artinaclick.com/search/results.asp?fk_artist=9054&refsrc=alleff 9055 Anderson Brooks Brooks Anderson was born in Santa Monica, California, in 1957. He combines whimsical images with precision in his execution. The result is poetic and seasoned. Winning attention and praise for his technique and so phistication of his ideas, Charnine's paintings are realistic in their detail yet with composition that evokes an emotional response from the viewer. Born in Nice on the French Riviera, Samy Charnine immigrated to the United States in 1983. He has had sho ws in San Diego, San Francisco, La Jolla and Newport Beach in California, Lahaina on the Island of Maui in Hawaii and in Denver and Aspen Colorado. He is collected by enthusiasts in the US, London, France, Monaco, Germany and Switzerland. Original oil pa intings range from $15,000 to $35,000. Charnine's 2003 calendar, Surreal Escapes published by Portal Publications was enthusiastically received and sold out in all outlets. http://www.artinaclick.com/search/results.asp?fk_artist=9057&refsrc=alleff 9058 Heller Audrey Growing up in San Francisco and Berkeley, my environment has always been rich in unconventional perspectives. I started taking pictures in my teens, at the same time that I became seriously involved with theater. My photographic work draws strongly from my training as a theater artist. I pursued studies in drama, literature and design, eventually earning a Master’s degree in performance studies at Northwestern University. I worked for many years as a lighting designer for theater and dance, then as a dire ctor and producer of classic and original work. The Oversized and The Undersized have been recurring images in my stage works, serving as allegories for the awkward and often comic struggle to find our proper relation to the world. Continuing this explorat ion of scale in the photographic medium I started to create miniature theatrical scenes on rusted out cars and vintage china. Audrey currently lives in San Francisco. Her work has been featured in top art festivals throughout the country. http://www.artinaclick.com/search/results.asp?fk_artist=9058&refsrc=alleff 9059 Boggs Kathryn http://www.artinaclick.com/search/results.asp?fk_artist=9059&refsrc=alleff 9060 Edwards Raquel Raquel Edwards is a professional fine art photographer based in Ashland, Oregon http://www.artinaclick.com/search/results.asp?fk_artist=9060&refsrc=alleff 9061 Owen Tjasa Tjasa Owen’s work is a confluence of her international travels, her enthusiasm for written correspondence and her love for landscapes, inland as well as coastal. Having grown up by the Atlantic seashore, she is drawn to the ever changing skies and coastal scenes. In addition, while living in France for three years and recently spending time in Tuscany, she was inspired by the endless rows of trees and distant hills which she has incorporated into some of her newest works. During her foreign travels and time away from the studio, she photographs, sketches and captures landscape details and textures. In her San Francisco studio she integrates the themes of rural and coastal landscape as well as correspondence to create her well recognized larger format paintin gs. The artist employs acrylic, oil pastel as well as collage media in her canvases. Her subtle and whimsical notations on many of the pieces invite the viewer to create a personal relationship with the work of art open to their own interpretation. Owen ha s studied fine arts, art history, and interior architecture on both American coasts and abroad. She attended and received her BA at the University of Virginia and studied at the National Academy of Art in New York, the Academy of Art in San Francisco and C oupa in Paris. Her work has been shown extensively in the US and internationally and has been acquired by many corporate collections as well as by a distinguished list of private collectors. Currently Tjasa lives in San Francisco with her husband and two children, Finn & Remy. http://www.artinaclick.com/search/results.asp?fk_artist=9061&refsrc=alleff 9063 Paraskevas Michael http://www.artinaclick.com/search/results.asp?fk_artist=9063&refsrc=alleff 9064 Protsouk Andrei When it comes to the fine art of Andrei Protsouk, fine line" is the recurring theme throughout his works. The canvases and linens are etched with his paint brush through which "his soul" creates an image of love and beauty using defined lines and the right texture to bring out every beautiful color he lays on the canvas. Protsouk's passion for art has been with him throughout his life, originating in Donetsk, Ukraine, where he was born and raised. He credits his parents with structuring his path of enlightenment and cultural education. Protsouk's talent was first noticed in elementary school where he was scrutinized by his teachers for doodling during class. But it was his teachers who recognized his talent for art and transferred him to the Donetsk School of Art. After graduating with near perfect grades, he applied at the Lugansk State School of Fine Art and graduated from there in 1981. His teachers at Lugansk encouraged Protsouk to continue his art education by applying to the prestigious Repine Academy of Art in St. Petersburg, where his talent was further developed. Graduation from the Repine Academy marked 17 years of art education for Protsouk, and the artist was more than ready to share his works with the world. In 1992, he moved to the United States. He has held many shows in Soho, New York, and where he now lives - Stroudsburg, PA.
