Helga Sermat
Helga was born in Toronto of Estonian heritage. She traveled and lived in many interesting places including Tanzania, Spain and Estonia. She lived in Vancouver for 15 years where she worked as a costume and prop maker, and children's art educator. Helga has spent her entire life being involved in art. Her formal training includes a degree in humanities and art history, as well as studies in Fine Art at the prestigious Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver, and at the Saidye Bronfman School of Fine Art in Montreal. She moved to Montreal in 1997 to pursue art and illustration full time. Helga lives in the heart of Little Italy in Montreal, which provides her with a limitless source of visual and cultural inspiration. Whether working with fabric, paint or pencil, her main inspiration has always been color. The subject matter varies from imaginary urban and natural landscapes and structures, to animals placed in human settings. She has developed her own technique of working with color pencil on paper, building up many layers of color which gives a vibrant painterly quality to her always delightful finished pieces.
