Itzchak Tarkay
At the age of nine, Tarkay and his family were sent to the Mathausen concentration camp, until Allied liberation freed them a year later. In 1949, his family immigrated to Israel, living in kibbutz for several years and by 1951 he had received a scholarship to the Bezalel Art Academy. He then studied at the Avni Institute, which he graduated from in 1956. The inspiration for his work clearly lies with French Impressionism. His most celebrated theme; a woman’s image, centered, linked with environmental subjects such as seascapes or in-door objects such as chairs or tables. His rich tapestry of form and color is achieved through the use of silk screening, with many colors laid over one another to create texture and transparency. He has had one man shows in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and in NY and his works hang in collections around the world, including Israeli Embassies, major banks and insurance companies as well as in many private collections.
