Roma Tearne
Roma Tearne is a Sri Lankan born painter who has lived for many years in Europe. Her current series of work evolves from her experiences in Italy, especially Pompeii and Herculaneum. They are still-life paintings of a special kind that try to catch something of the feel of objects which have emerged into the light of day after lying for centuries in darkness. Like archaeological finds they are possessed of the sense of the fullness of life as well as of life that has passed away. In her images of vessels, the oil paint is placed layer upon layer, then carefully removed to produce a kind of iridescent glow upon which the containers float. Roma currently lives and works in Oxfordshire where most of her current exhibitions are held.
