Mackenzie Thorpe
Mackenzie Thorpe was born in 1956 in a poor industrial town in the North of England the youngest of seven children. He struggled with severe dyslexia as a child and his teachers told him to sit and draw and not to bother with academic subjects because he couldn't do it. So he drew constantly with found materials because conventonal art supplies were an unaffordable luxury. Cigarette packs, cold ashes from the fireplace and his mother's make-up became his tools. In 1979 he began studies at Byam Shaw Art College in London. He was accepted based on the sheer talent of his sketces. Upon leaving college, Thorpe was employed in local goverment in art related work, primarily with children. Today he continues to be active spending his time visiting schools to encourage children, especially those with learning diabilities, to learn. Mackenzie Thorpe resides in a charming Yorkshire town among the friends and family he depicts with such tenderness in his art. Working with handmade pastel pigments and acrylics, his images are alive with the universal message of hope within the struggle. It appeals to the child in all of us. We are all part of the same human experiences. It is this message that has made Mackenzie Thorpe a top selling artist worldwide.
