Vincent Van Gogh
Born Vincent Willem Van Gogh in Groot-Zundert in 1853, Van Gogh initially worked as an art dealer before devoting his life to painting. His work was influenced by the Impressionists and by Japanese prints. His early paintings are of peasants and reveal visions of poverty and misery. The influence of French Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro led Van Gogh to adopt the use of brilliant hues in his paintings. His Post-impressionist style showed the intense colors of green, yellow and blue in swirling brushstrokes and his interest in juxtaposing complimentary colors to reveal their emotional impact. Van Gogh’s most famous paintings are of wheat fields and Starry Night. The Dutch painter suffered mental breakdowns throughout his short life and was committed to mental asylums on several occasions. Painting served as therapy to him until his suicide outside of Paris in 1890. Van Gogh had a great impact on the Expressionist movement in modern art and his work can be seen in museum collections throughout the world.
