Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn
Born in Leiden in 1606, Rembrandt attended the University of Leiden at age 14. He left the university to study art locally and then in Amsterdam. His work was so greatly respected, that at the age of 22 he took his first pupils. Rembrandt painted mythological and religious scenes in addition of portraits and landscapes. In 1663 he married Saskia van Uylenburgh, which enabled him to be in contact with wealthy patrons to commission portraits. He painted both private portraits and group portraits. His paintings used chiaroscuro (the contrast of light and dark) and were highly emotional. Rembrandt was adept at displaying psychological drama in his paintings. Throughout his life he also painted about 60 self-portraits. As he matured his work became more spiritual, his brushwork more bold and his palette grew to be richly coloristic with impastos that floated over the canvas. Among his most famous works are the Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp, Night Watch and Return of the Prodigal Son. Rembrandt is revered as a master of the Dutch Baroque and his works can be seen in museum collections world-wide.
