Victorian: The Victorian Era denotes a period of British history when Queen Victoria reigned. It includes the entire half of the 19th Century, a time when Britain was the most powerful nation in the world. The Victorian period was known for a rather stern morality. It was also marked by a general earnestness about life and by a confidence that Britain's domestic prosperity (the Industrial Revolution) and vast holdings overseas were signs of the countries overall righteousness. As the Victorian period continued, however, such easy beliefs were increasingly challenged. Victorian artists chose to create art that could be widely understood by diverse social and educational backgrounds to offer entertainment as well as cultural improvement. Victorian art was very popular and discussed extensively. The extraordinary richness and complexity of the Victorian era reflected an equally rich and complex society. Artists of the period and key paintings include the Pre-Raphaelites Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema's Silver Favourites, John Waterhouse's The Shrine, Lord Frederick Leighton's Flaming June.
