Andy Warhol
Andrew Warhola was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 6, 1928. He attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology and graduated with a degree in pictoral design in 1949. After graduation he moved to New York city and worked a a commerical artist for ten years. He created window displays for a department store on Fifth Avenue that served as a forum for his comicbook superhero images. In the late 1950's Andy started painting and achieved fame in 1962 with his Cambell's soup cans, painted Brillo boxes and Coca-Cola bottles. Fascinated with celebrities he also produced works of stars including Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy, and himself. The mass production of his silk screen prints took place in his studio, which he called the Factory, a haven for celebrities and eccentrics. The Factory, had its own house band and was the site of Andy's films. In 1968 the Pop Art icon was shot and nearly killed by one of his followers. He recovered and went on to produce prints dealing with political issues and more of celebrities. Before his death after a gallbladder operation on February 27, 1987, his books The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, Portraits of the Seventies and Exposures were released. Warhol's mass-produced prints reflected the artist's noninvolvement in his art and served as commentary on contemporary American society. He was the darling of the Pop Art movement and one of the most influential American artists of the second half of the 20th century.
